Alaska operator exam preparation

Source check: 2026-10-04. Shared WPI courses are linked only where the standardized exam and class match are confirmed. Local grades may not equal WPI class numbers. Your authority's current documents control.

Water Treatment

Shared WPI prep for confirmed exams only

Program authority: Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Water, Operator Certification and Training Program

Local levels: Provisional; Level 1; Level 2; Level 3; Level 4. Separate small-water-system credentials: Small Untreated Water System Certification and Small Treated Water System Certification.

DEC explicitly adopts the 2025 standardized ABC/WPI examinations for WT Provisional/1–4 and directs candidates to WPI's corresponding Class I–IV criteria. Provisional and Level 1 share the examination. Mixed classification reflects the separately named, in-house-generated small-water-system examinations, not customized ABC exams; those small-system credentials are not additional WPI classes.

Sources and exam scope

  • Information for Written and Proctored Online Exams

'2025 Standardized ABC exams are now being used'; lists 'Water Treatment (WT) Provisional/1, 2, 3, 4'; separately identifies 'in-house generated' Small Untreated and Small Treated Water System exams. Identifies ABC as the former name of WPI and links its 2025 criteria.

  • 2025 Need-to-Know Criteria

The state-linked '2025 Standardized Water Treatment Operator Need-to-Know' section provides WPI Standardized Water Treatment Operator Classes I, II, III and IV.

  • Small Water System Certification

Names Small Untreated Water System Certification and Small Treated Water System Certification; links their exam description, formula sheet, Alaska small-system operator manual and ADEC correspondence courses.

Wastewater Treatment

Shared WPI prep for confirmed exams only

Program authority: Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Water, Operator Certification and Training Program

Local levels: Wastewater Stabilization Pond (WWSP); Provisional; Level 1; Level 2; Level 3; Level 4.

DEC explicitly identifies standardized 2025 ABC/WPI exams for WWT Provisional/1–4; the state-linked WPI criteria identify Classes I–IV. Provisional and Level 1 share the examination. WWSP is a separate, lower, state-specific credential with an in-house-generated exam, not a customized ABC exam. WWSP certification is required for unaerated lagoon systems serving at least 500 people or having at least 100 service connections; smaller WWSP systems do not require certified operators. Provisional through Level 4 wastewater-treatment certificates also satisfy the WWSP requirement.

  • Information for Written and Proctored Online Exams

'2025 Standardized ABC exams are now being used'; lists 'Wastewater Treatment (WWT) Provisional/1, 2, 3, 4'; separately states that the program administers an 'in-house generated' Wastewater Stabilization Pond exam.

  • 2025 Need-to-Know Criteria

The state-linked '2025 Standardized Wastewater Treatment Operator Need-to-Know' section provides WPI Standardized Wastewater Treatment Operator Classes I, II, III and IV.

  • Wastewater Stabilization Ponds (WWSP)

Cites 18 AAC 74.120(b)(1) for lagoons without aeration; gives the 500-person/100-connection certification thresholds; says Provisional through Level 4 certifications are higher than WWSP; links the WWSP exam description, formula sheet, study guide and DEC correspondence course.

Water Distribution

Shared WPI prep

Program authority: Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Water, Operator Certification and Training Program

Local levels: Provisional; Level 1; Level 2; Level 3; Level 4.

DEC explicitly identifies standardized 2025 ABC/WPI exams for WD Provisional/1–4; the state-linked WPI criteria identify the corresponding Classes I–IV. Provisional and Level 1 share the examination. The separately named Small Untreated/Small Treated credentials concern small water systems, not separately identified WD grades; no customized ABC distribution exam was identified.

Wastewater Collection

Shared WPI prep

Program authority: Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Water, Operator Certification and Training Program

Local levels: Provisional; Level 1; Level 2; Level 3; Level 4.

Wastewater-collection scope is explicitly documented independently of drinking water: DEC identifies standardized 2025 ABC/WPI exams for WWC Provisional/1–4, and its linked WPI criteria identify Classes I–IV. Provisional and Level 1 share the examination. No customized ABC or separate state-specific collection examination was identified in the opened sources.

Dedicated course research

Dedicated prep is not available or being sold yet.

  • Separate Alaska Small Untreated and Small Treated Water System exam-preparation routes, using DEC's linked exam description, Alaska small-system operator manual and formula/conversion sheet. These in-house exams must not be routed as WPI Class I. DEC correspondence courses also have a specified role as an alternative to the experience requirement; ordinary exam preparation should not be represented as that approved alternative.
  • Separate Alaska Wastewater Stabilization Pond exam preparation using DEC's WWSP exam description, formula sheet and study guide, addressing the local unaerated-lagoon classification and certification thresholds. Do not route WWSP as a WPI Class I exam.

What still needs confirmation

  • As-of target: October 3, 2026. Live official pages were opened at tool timestamps October 4, 2026 Eastern time, still October 3 in Alaska; no archived historical snapshot was established.
  • Shared levels 1–4 are supported by DEC's explicit standardized-exam adoption and stream-by-stream Provisional/1–4 list together with the state-designated WPI 2025 Class I–IV criteria. Provisional is not a separate WPI class; WWSP and Small Untreated/Small Treated are excluded from shared levels.
  • Eight source pages were opened. The DEC regulations landing page identifies 18 AAC 74 and its November 26, 2016 effective date, but the full externally hosted BASIS text was not opened. Mandatory-versus-voluntary applicability and all exemptions for the four conventional streams were not comprehensively audited; no voluntary/mandatory distinction is asserted beyond the expressly documented WWSP and small-system information.
