Program authority: Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), Bureau of Water
Local levels: Water-supply operator: Small System; Class I; Class II; Class III; Class IV.
Mandatory KDHE water-supply certification covers treatment and distribution, rather than separate mandatory treatment/distribution credentials. State-specific routing is supported by the state audit's account of KDHE question maintenance and WPI contracting as a prospective option. No standardized WPI/ABC adoption or class equivalence was verified.
No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.
KDHE administers the mandatory program with five water certification levels; the classification table names Small System and I–IV. A water supply system includes facilities used to obtain, treat, or distribute water.
KDHE reviewed water-supply examination questions and made language updates in 2021. Officials said removing the fee cap would have allowed consideration of contracting with WPI to maintain and administer some or all examinations.
KDHE's local outline includes treatment, distribution and pumping, Kansas One Call, and federal, state and local water-system regulations, monitoring, reporting and recordkeeping.

Local levels: Wastewater operator: Small System; Class I; Class II; Class III; Class IV.
Mandatory KDHE wastewater-treatment certification has its own local examinations. The state audit describes KDHE's review and revision of wastewater questions, not use of standardized WPI examinations. No standardized WPI/ABC scope or local-to-WPI class correspondence was verified.
No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.
KDHE administers five wastewater certification levels. The table names Small System and I–IV; Small System applies to nonoverflowing wastewater ponds, with higher classifications covering secondary and advanced/specialized treatment.
KDHE reviewed Small System and Class 1 wastewater questions in 2020–2021 and removed some questions. At the audit date, KDHE was reviewing wastewater Classes 2–4 questions. Each local class has its own certification examination.
The outline has separate Class I–IV sections, including Clean Water Act and state permitting requirements, ponds, biological treatment and sludge handling; advanced classes add nutrient removal and process troubleshooting.

Program authority: Kansas Water Environment Association (KWEA), voluntary Distribution Systems certification; KDHE for mandatory water-supply operational supervision
Local levels: KWEA Distribution Systems: Class I; Class II; Class III; Class IV (voluntary). KDHE distribution-only water-supply systems: Small System water certification.
The separate distribution credential is voluntary and issued by KWEA. Its ABC collaboration and reciprocity statements do not identify standardized versus customized examinations, so its exam system and WPI class correspondence remain unverified. Separately, distribution-only water-supply systems require KDHE water-supply supervision; that state-specific route must not be confused with KWEA's voluntary credential.
No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.
KWEA administers a voluntary program in collaboration with ABC, explicitly including Distribution Systems; after a written examination, KWEA issues the certificate. The page does not identify the examination as standardized or customized.
The program's examination eligibility table lists Classes I, II, III and IV; applications and examination fees go to KWEA.
There is no mandatory certification program for distribution-system personnel, but the water-supply definition includes distribution pipes and the Small System classification explicitly includes Distribution System Only.
Exam route under review
Program authority: Kansas Water Environment Association (KWEA), voluntary Collection Systems certification
Local levels: Collection Systems: Class I; Class II; Class III; Class IV (voluntary).
KWEA offers a separate voluntary collection credential. Its ABC collaboration, membership and reciprocity do not establish standardized rather than customized exams or WPI class correspondence. This is an offered but unverified exam route, not a not-offered stream; KDHE wastewater-treatment certification is a different credential.
No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.
KWEA explicitly includes Collection Systems among its voluntary disciplines and issues certificates after written examinations; it does not specify standardized or customized exam products.
The examination eligibility table names Classes I, II, III and IV.
The brochure explicitly states there is no mandatory certification program for collection-system personnel.
