Water Treatment

Exam route under review

Program authority: Maryland Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators, Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE)

Local levels: Class G - No chemical treatment; Class 1 - Disinfection; Class 2 - Chemical Treatment; Class 3 - Simple Iron Removal; Class 4 - Complete Treatment; Class 5 - Site Specific. The exam application specifies Water 5 options RO, DE, Arsenic, or GWUDI.

Official sources establish Maryland's process-specific classes and ABC involvement, but not the current standardized versus customized product for every class. Supplementary MCET guidance describes ABC assembling exams to Board prescriptions, indicating customized rather than standardized exams; its administrator designation and current class-by-class scope were not verified. Maryland Classes 1–4 must not be equated with WPI standardized Classes I–IV.

Wastewater Treatment

Exam route under review

Program authority: Maryland Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators, Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE)

Local levels: Class 1 - Lagoons; Class 2 - Physical/Biological; Class 3 - Package Activated Sludge Plants; Class 4 - Trickling Filters/Rotating Biological Contactors (RBC); Class 5 - Activated Sludge; Class 6 - Site Specific; Class S - Solids Handling; Class A - Advanced Wastewater Treatment. MDE additionally publishes a Wastewater 5A certification exam study guide; 5A is not a separate class in the opened regulatory table.

Wastewater evidence was checked separately. Official classification and 5A outline sources do not identify the current exam product or provider by class. Supplementary MCET guidance describes Board-prescribed ABC exams, including site-specific Class 6, but its current scope and designated-administrator status were not verified. Class A is used with other classes; S is required only where works are limited to solids handling. No standardized WPI class mapping is established.

Water Distribution

Exam route under review

Program authority: Maryland Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators, Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE)

Local levels: One class: Water Distribution (WD in COMAR; D in Board/application terminology). The examination application labels it Water Distribution Systems Operator (D), class 1.

A single local distribution classification is established independently of treatment. No authoritative current standardized WPI scope or correspondence to WPI Class I was verified. Supplementary MCET guidance describes a Maryland-specific Water Distribution exam prescription assembled by ABC, but is not confirmed designated-administrator evidence. COMAR does not classify distribution separately when operated and supervised by certified water-treatment personnel.

Wastewater Collection

Exam route under review

Program authority: Maryland Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators, Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE)

Local levels: Class 1 - Wastewater collection systems with gravity flow; Class 2 - Wastewater collection systems with gravity and pumped or vacuum flow. The opened exam application offers only Wastewater Collection System Operator (C), class 2.

Two certification classifications are verified, but a separate Class 1 exam was not established. Supplementary MCET guidance provides a Class 2 prescription and describes ABC assembly to Board instructions; official current standardized/customized product confirmation was not found. Neither local class has a verified WPI standardized-class correspondence. Collection is not separately classified when operated and supervised by certified wastewater-treatment personnel.

Dedicated course research

Dedicated prep is not available or being sold yet.

  • Use Maryland's local process-class structure and Board-specific need-to-know criteria when developing any dedicated outlines; do not relabel Maryland Classes 1–4 as WPI standardized levels.
  • Water Class 5 needs technology-specific preparation/outline confirmation for the application options RO, DE, Arsenic and GWUDI; it is a site-specific classification, not a generic upper WPI level.
  • Wastewater 5A has an official Maryland outline supporting dedicated activated-sludge, tertiary/nutrient-removal, solids-handling, laboratory and calculation preparation. Preserve A and S distinctions rather than treating them as ordinal levels.
  • Wastewater Class 6 requires site-specific outline confirmation because the regulatory classification covers alternative technologies outside the other treatment classes.
  • For distribution and collection, confirm current Maryland-specific prescriptions with the Board before development; preserve the single distribution class and the distinction between collection Classes 1 and 2, with only C2 listed on the opened exam application.
  • Include Maryland COMAR 26.06.01 certification/classification requirements as a jurisdictional module; the opened sources do not establish that a separate Maryland-regulations exam section exists.

What still needs confirmation

  • Requested cutoff: October 3, 2026. Sources were retrieved October 4, 2026; live pages are not archived cutoff snapshots. Used announcements dated on or before the cutoff.
  • Eight source opens completed. Official sources do not explicitly verify current standardized WPI/ABC scope plus local-to-WPI class correspondence, so all verifiedSharedLevels remain empty.
  • Supplementary public-college MCET handbooks state 'ABC uses the Board’s Exam Prescriptions to put together certification exams' and 'Each certification classification has its own exam created by ABC based on the Board’s instructions': https://www.mcet.org/_assets/preparing-for-the-exam.pdf and https://www.mcet.org/_assets/whomustbecertified.pdf. MDE recommends MCET training, but MCET was not verified as a state-designated exam administrator; these are customized-exam leads, not authoritative current routing verification.
  • The Board-linked exam application is revised January 2017 and contains obsolete delivery references; the official training page links a 2022 schedule. These were used for classification/content evidence, not current delivery arrangements. The 2025 5A guide supplements the older application.
  • Unverified means insufficient authoritative current exam-system evidence, not that certification is unavailable or that standardized exams are unsupported. ABC involvement, delivery vendors, reciprocity and matching class numerals were not treated as standardized-exam proof.
