Mississippi operator exam preparation

Source check: 2026-10-04. Shared WPI courses are linked only where the standardized exam and class match are confirmed. Local grades may not equal WPI class numbers. Your authority's current documents control.

Water Treatment

Exam route under review

Program authority: Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), Bureau of Public Water Supply

Local levels: Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D; Class E is the distribution-only/purchased-water classification.

Mandatory waterworks certification uses treatment-based letter classes, not a verified WPI I–IV ladder. The official rules require Bureau examinations; the currently linked handbook establishes PSI delivery and use of an ABC formula table, but neither establishes standardized versus customized ABC/WPI exams or current state-specific exam authorship.

Wastewater Treatment

WPI exam, class match under review

Program authority: Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), Wastewater Operator Training and Certification Program

Local levels: Class I, Class II, Class III, Class IV

MDEQ explicitly confirms a 2026 transition to WPI standardized wastewater examinations. Mandatory municipal/domestic treatment certification is verified. However, the opened sources do not expressly identify which WPI class exam corresponds to each Mississippi facility-based class; identical Roman numerals alone are not used as a crosswalk, so shared-level routing remains unverified.

Sources and exam scope

  • Wastewater Operator Resources

'In 2026, MDEQ’s wastewater operator certification program transitioned from our existing wastewater examinations to the standardized wastewater examinations developed by our testing partner, WPI.' It links the 2025 Need-to-Know Criteria and describes criteria 'for each exam level.'

  • 11 Miss. Admin. Code Part 6, Chapter 3 - amended August 24, 2017

Rule 3.1 requires certified operators for municipal/domestic treatment plants and excludes solely industrial, industry-owned treatment facilities. Rules 3.3–3.4 identify Classes I–IV; I covers stabilization lagoons/septic tank-sand filters, while II–IV vary by process and capacity. Passing Class II is required before sitting Class III or IV.

  • WPI 2025 Need-to-Know Criteria - linked by MDEQ

Lists '2025 Standardized Wastewater Treatment Operator' Classes I, II, III and IV, but provides no Mississippi local-class crosswalk; instructs candidates to confirm appropriate materials with their certifying authority.

Water Distribution

Exam route under review

Program authority: Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), Bureau of Public Water Supply

Local levels: Class E for distribution-only operators; Class A–D waterworks responsible-charge certificates also encompass their systems' distribution operations. No separate numbered distribution ladder verified.

Distribution certification is offered through the waterworks program, specifically Class E for distribution-only duties. No evidence establishes Class E as any WPI standardized distribution class, or proves standardized/customized/state-specific exam provenance.

Official program information

No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.

Sources and exam scope

  • Bureau of Public Water Supply regulations, Chapter 2

Rule 2.2.1(1): Class E covers systems that purchase water without additional treatment and 'waterworks operators whose only job responsibility is the operation and maintenance of the distribution system(s).' Rule 2.3.5 requires the Bureau's written examination. The responsible-charge definition includes treatment plants, wells and distribution systems.

  • Public Water System Operations Manual, May 2019

All-classifications introduction assigns the certified operator responsibility for treatment facilities and distribution systems. Class E duties include residual checks past the master meter and within distribution.

  • MSDH PSI Computer-Based Testing Information Bulletin

PSI administration and an ABC formula table are documented, but standardized distribution exam adoption and Class E correspondence are not.

Wastewater Collection

Exam route under review

Program authority: Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), Wastewater Operator Training and Certification Program

Local levels: Class I-C; Class II-C (voluntary collection-only certification)

Collection certification and its exact local grades are explicitly verified. MDEQ's umbrella 2026 standardized-wastewater transition notice does not expressly name collection exams or map I-C/II-C to WPI Collection I/II. Collection exam provenance therefore remains unverified, not unsupported or not-offered.

Dedicated course research

Dedicated prep is not available or being sold yet.

  • Drinking water requires Mississippi-specific local-class and regulatory material: Class D chlorination/direct feed, Class C pressure-filtration and conditioning processes, Class B advanced/multiple processes, Class A surface-water/GWUDI and specified softening/coagulation, plus Class E distribution-only/purchased-water operations. Obtain current MSDH class-specific exam outlines before choosing standardized, customized or state-specific exam courses.
  • Wastewater needs a Mississippi regulatory/classification supplement distinguishing mandatory treatment I–IV from voluntary collection I-C/II-C, including the collection 1.0-MGD boundary, facility-based treatment classifications and the Class II examination prerequisite for III/IV. Confirm the WPI class crosswalk, especially collection, before shared-level routing.
  • Published rules require a recent agency-sponsored or approved short course for examination eligibility; Echelon course approval is not established. No separate unique wastewater technical exam is proven after the announced WPI transition.

What still needs confirmation

  • Requested cutoff: October 3, 2026. Live official sources were retrieved October 4, 2026; no archived October 3 snapshot was acquired. MDEQ's notice says the transition occurred in 2026 but gives no exact commencement date.
  • Eight source opens total. Findings use opened official state documents/pages and the state-linked exam developer, not search snippets, membership listings, reciprocity, or delivery-provider identity.
  • The MDEQ resources page labels September 2026 regulatory changes as proposed. They were not treated as enacted; the published 2017 regulation supplies local grades and voluntary/mandatory distinctions.
  • The current MSDH page still links a March 2021 examination handbook and May 2019 operations manual. These do not establish current standardized versus customized ABC/WPI exam provenance. All shared-level arrays are intentionally empty where an explicit Mississippi-to-WPI class correspondence was not verified.
