New Hampshire operator exam preparation

Source check: 2026-10-04. Shared WPI courses are linked only where the standardized exam and class match are confirmed. Local grades may not equal WPI class numbers. Your authority's current documents control.

Water Treatment

Exam route under review

Program authority: New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), Water Works Operator Certification Program

Local levels: Grade IA: combined treatment and distribution certification; treatment Grades I, II, III and IV. Operator-in-Training provisions for Grades I, II and III.

Mandatory water-works certification. Official sources establish the grades and availability of treatment Grades I–IV computer-based exams, but do not identify standardized WPI/ABC versus customized ABC or state-developed examinations. No local-grade-to-standardized-WPI-class mapping verified; Grade IA must not be mapped to Class I.

Wastewater Treatment

Dedicated prep not yet available

Program authority: New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), Wastewater Operations Section and Wastewater Operator Certification Committee

Local levels: Grade I, Grade II, Grade III and Grade IV; corresponding I-OIT, II-OIT, III-OIT and IV-OIT statuses.

Mandatory certification for public wastewater treatment plant operators. NHDES documents a distinct NH written-exam format: multiple-choice/matching and math-word problems at all grades, plus essays at Grades III and IV. A committee interview is required for qualifying applicants. This supports state-specific routing, not shared standardized WPI levels; the sources do not establish whether any individual questions originate with ABC.

Sources and exam scope

  • Wastewater Operator Certification - NHDES

NHDES' Wastewater Operations Section oversees treatment-operator certification; public WWTP operators must be certified. Identifies Env-Wq 304 as the governing certification rules.

  • Wastewater Operator FAQ - NHDES

Lists Grades I–IV and their OIT statuses. Exam-format table specifies matching, math-word problems and Grade III–IV essays. Requires a Certification Committee interview for Grade II or higher, or Grade I operators in responsible charge, once during a career.

Water Distribution

Exam route under review

Program authority: New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), Water Works Operator Certification Program

Local levels: Grade IA: combined distribution and treatment certification; distribution Grades I, II, III and IV. Operator-in-Training provisions for Grades I, II and III.

Distribution is separately identified in official rules and exam availability, not inferred from treatment certification. Standardized WPI/ABC adoption, customized ABC use and class correspondence remain unverified.

Wastewater Collection

Dedicated prep not yet available

Program authority: New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA), Collection System Certification Sub Committee - voluntary regional certification

Local levels: Grade I, Grade II, Grade III and Grade IV; OIT status available at all four grades.

NH-specific administrator information identifies this as voluntary NEWEA certification, separate from mandatory NHDES wastewater-treatment certification. The state-specific label denotes NEWEA's own regional program-specific examinations, not an NH government-authored exam: its June 2026 brochure explicitly assigns exam preparation to its Sub Committee. No standardized WPI/ABC adoption or shared-class mapping is established.

Sources and exam scope

  • Resources - New Hampshire - NEWEA

'Certification for Collection System Operators is a voluntary program administered through the New England Water Environment Association'; identifies four grades and NEWEA's examination committee.

  • Collection Systems Certification Program - NEWEA, revised June 2026

Sections 2.1, 3.3, 6.1 and 10 establish voluntary status, OIT at Grades 1–4, and Sub Committee preparation of examinations. Its exam section supplies a four-grade Need to Know outline and describes 100 multiple-choice questions.

Dedicated course research

Dedicated prep is not available or being sold yet.

  • Grade IA combined water-treatment/distribution small-system pathway content, distinct from Grades I–IV; use NH's Small Public Water System Operator Course pathway and Env-Dw 502/RSA 332-E requirements without asserting a WPI Class I equivalence.
  • NH wastewater-treatment Grades I–IV preparation aligned to the NHDES written-exam format and NHDES wastewater formula sheet; include math-word-problem work, Grade III–IV essay preparation and the applicable Certification Committee interview process. Add a clearly identified Env-Wq 304 local-responsibilities supplement.
  • Voluntary NEWEA collection Grades I–IV preparation using the June 2026 program outline: equipment operation/evaluation/maintenance; collection-system operation/maintenance/restoration; lift stations; monitoring/evaluation/adjustment; applied math, safety and administration. Use the NEWEA formula sheet and grade-specific suggested references, not an assumed WPI outline.

What still needs confirmation

  • Requested cutoff: October 3, 2026. Live sources were accessed October 4, 2026; no historical snapshot was obtained. The official water-rule compilation includes an August 2025 effective filing, and the collection brochure is dated June 2026.
  • Eight distinct source URLs were opened. The official NHDES water-certification overview PDF could not be extracted and its direct download returned HTTP 403; it supplies no evidence here.
  • No stream has sufficient evidence for verified shared WPI Classes 1–4. Computer-based delivery and reciprocity provisions were not treated as standardized-exam proof.
  • NEWEA directly documents its voluntary collection program and NH applicability, but the opened NHDES sources do not independently document a state designation of NEWEA or a separate mandatory NH collection certificate.
  • Water Grades I–IV need an authoritative current examination outline or explicit examination-system confirmation before choosing standardized, customized or dedicated-exam course routing.
