Shared WPI prep for confirmed exams only
Program authority: South Carolina Environmental Certification Board, Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR)
Local levels: Trainee Water Treatment Operator; Class E, Class D, Class C, Class B, Class A Water Treatment Operator.
The Board expressly adopted ABC standardized Water Treatment examinations and continues to identify standard exams on its current examination page. That page explicitly maps WPI Class I to local D and Class IV to local A; those are the only individually verified shared levels here. C/Class II and B/Class III correspondence was not explicitly documented in the opened sources. Class E is a separate required local entry examination, with no verified WPI-standardized, customized-ABC, or state-specific classification. Mixed denotes a verified standardized component plus unresolved E, not proof of a customized exam.
On May 1, 2017, the Board adopted the Association of Boards of Certifications new standardized exams for Biological Wastewater, Water Treatment and Water Distribution.
Lists Water Treatment entry examination at level E; labels its references 'WPI NEED-TO-KNOW CRITERIA (Class I = D Level; Class IV = A Level)'; FAQ refers expressly to 'new standard exams' in Water Treatment, Water Distribution and Biological Wastewater.
Section 40-23-300(B) separately establishes Trainee Water Treatment Operator and Classes E, D, C, B and A, with Board-approved examination requirements for each graded class.
Shared WPI prep for confirmed exams only
Program authority: South Carolina Environmental Certification Board, Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR)
Local levels: Biological Wastewater Treatment: Trainee, D, C, B, A. Physical/Chemical Wastewater Treatment: separate Trainee, D, C, B, A licenses.
Shared levels apply ONLY to Biological Wastewater Treatment: the Board expressly adopted its standardized ABC exams and explicitly supplies D/WPI I and A/WPI IV correspondence. Intermediate correspondence remains unverified. Physical/Chemical has separate graded examinations and WPI study references, but the Board's standardized-adoption statement and current standard-exam FAQ do not include it. Physical/Chemical exam system is therefore unverified - not established as standardized, customized ABC, or state-specific. Mixed denotes this verified biological/unresolved physical-chemical split; do not apply biological shared routing to the industrial track.
Standardized ABC adoption explicitly names Biological Wastewater, Water Treatment and Water Distribution, not Physical/Chemical Wastewater.
Lists Biological and Physical/Chemical Wastewater as separate exam categories; gives 'Class I = D Level; Class IV = A Level'; standard-exam FAQ names Biological Wastewater only. Physical/Chemical references include Industrial Waste Treatment and Treatment of Metal Wastestreams.
Sections 51-3(F) and 51-3(G) separately define Trainee, D, C, B and A licensure for Physical/Chemical and Biological Wastewater Treatment operators, respectively.
Shared WPI prep
Program authority: South Carolina Environmental Certification Board, Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR)
Local levels: Trainee Water Distribution System Operator; Class D, Class C, Class B, Class A Water Distribution System Operator.
Explicit Board adoption establishes standardized ABC/WPI exams for this stream, independently of drinking-water treatment evidence. Only D/WPI I and A/WPI IV have explicit class correspondence in the opened sources; C/WPI II and B/WPI III remain unverified for shared-level routing. PSI delivery is not the basis for the standardized classification. Statutory Group I distribution facilities do not require a certified operator.
The Board's May 1, 2017 adoption of ABC 'new standardized exams' explicitly includes Water Distribution.
Names Water Distribution among the 'new standard exams' and provides the WPI correspondence 'Class I = D Level; Class IV = A Level'.
Section 40-23-310 names Trainee Water Distribution System Operator and Classes D, C, B and A; subsection (A)(1) states that Group I distribution facilities do not require a certified operator.
Shared WPI prep
Program authority: Water Environment Association of South Carolina (WEASC), Voluntary Collection Certification Program (VCC)
Local levels: D, C, B, A Wastewater Collection System Operator certification; D is entry level and A is highest.
This is WEASC's voluntary certification, distinct from the LLR mandatory operator-license program. Its own certification-program page explicitly establishes nationally standardized WPI exams and all four local-to-WPI correspondences. The page identifies its linked Need-to-Know Criteria as the 2025 edition. PSI is the delivery provider, not the certifying authority or proof of standardization.
States 'The nationally standardized exams used for this certification are developed by Water Professionals International (WPI), formerly the Association of Boards of Certification (ABC).' Links explicitly label Class I Wastewater Collection Operator ('D' Level), Class II ('C' Level), Class III ('B' Level), and Class IV ('A' Level). Describes the program as voluntary.
Dedicated prep is not available or being sold yet.
