Shared WPI prep
Program authority: Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR), Board for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators and Onsite Sewage System Professionals
Local levels: Waterworks Operator Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, Class 4; the same licensing category also includes Class 5 and Class 6 for no/limited-treatment waterworks.
Standardized finding is limited to Virginia Classes 1–4. Explicit correspondence is VA Class 4 → WPI/ABC I, Class 3 → II, Class 2 → III, Class 1 → IV; verifiedSharedLevels denotes WPI classes, not identical Virginia class numbers. Class 1 is Virginia's highest grade. Class 5/6 exam construction remains unverified and is addressed under water-distribution; do not extend this standardized finding to them. VDH regulates waterworks but explicitly does not issue operator licenses or give examinations.
Under Education & Exams, DPOR designates the Standardized Water Treatment Operator Exams page as its CIB and states: 'VA Waterwork Class 4 = ABC Water Treatment Operator Class I,' followed by Class 3=II, Class 2=III and Class 1=IV.
'Need-to-Know Criteria outline the content that will be covered on WPI’s standardized examinations provided through ABC Testing, a WPI service.' The page offers both 2025 and 2019 criteria.
'Waterworks Operator Licenses are issued by the Board ... part of ... DPOR'; 'The Health Department is not involved with issuing licenses or giving examinations.' Last updated August 26, 2026.
Shared WPI prep
Program authority: Virginia DPOR, Board for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators and Onsite Sewage System Professionals
Local levels: Wastewater Works Operator Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, Class 4.
DPOR explicitly maps VA Class 4 → WPI/ABC Wastewater Treatment I, Class 3 → II, Class 2 → III and Class 1 → IV. verifiedSharedLevels denotes WPI classes. This is independently supported wastewater-treatment evidence, not an inference from drinking water. It does not establish a collection-system exam route.
Designates the Standardized Wastewater Treatment Operator Exams page as the Wastewater Works Classes 1–4 CIB and gives all four conversions: VA 4=ABC I, VA 3=II, VA 2=III, VA 1=IV.
'Need-to-Know Criteria outline the content that will be covered on WPI’s standardized examinations provided through ABC Testing, a WPI service.' Both 2025 and 2019 criteria are linked.
Section 360 describes wastewater works license scope by Class 4, Class 3, Class 2 and Class 1, referring to classified treatment works; Class 1 can operate all four classifications.
Exam route under review
Program authority: Virginia DPOR, Board for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators and Onsite Sewage System Professionals (waterworks licensing pathway, not a separately verified distribution credential)
Local levels: Waterworks Operator Class 5 and Class 6 are the distribution-experience licensing pathways; these are not established WPI Water Distribution Class I–IV equivalents.
Virginia rules expressly accept distribution-system experience only for Class 5/6 waterworks applicants. These local classes cover no-treatment or specified limited-treatment systems, with higher waterworks licenses also authorizing lower-class facilities. PSI offers distinct Virginia Class 5 and Class 6 exams, but the opened sources do not establish whether those exams are WPI-customized or state-specific, nor any standardized WPI distribution mapping. No separate voluntary distribution certification was verified.
No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.
Section 95(C): 'Experience operating and maintaining water distribution systems will only be considered for Class 5 or Class 6 waterworks operator license applicants.' Section 370 defines local waterworks license operating scope. Amendments effective January 16, 2026.
Class 5 serves 400 or more persons and Class 6 fewer than 400; each can provide no treatment or specified hypochlorination, corrosion-control or sequestration processes. Classified waterworks require an appropriately classified Virginia operator license.
Lists 'Virginia Waterworks Operator Class 5' and 'Virginia Waterworks Operator Class 6' as separate available tests. This establishes exam availability, not standardized WPI exam identity.

Program authority: Separate wastewater-collection certifying authority unverified; DPOR's Board for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators and Onsite Sewage System Professionals is the verified wastewater works licensor
Local levels: No collection-specific local certification grades verified. Wastewater Works Operator Classes 1–4 are established treatment-license grades, not verified collection equivalents.
The opened official licensing rules and designated exam catalog establish wastewater works/treatment licenses and exams but do not establish a distinct mandatory or voluntary wastewater-collection certification, authority or WPI collection-class mapping. Marked unverified, not not-offered: absence from this catalog is not proof that no collection credential exists.
No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.
Section 10 defines the board's license categories as waterworks and wastewater works. Section 360 specifies wastewater works Classes 1–4 by treatment-works classifications, without identifying separate collection certification grades.
The catalog lists Virginia Wastewater Works Operator Classes 1–4 and Waterworks Operator Classes 1–6; no separately titled wastewater-collection test appears in the opened catalog.
