Shared WPI prep
Program authority: Washington State Department of Health (DOH)
Local levels: Water Treatment Plant Operator (WTPO) 1, 2, 3, 4; WTPO in Training 1, 2, 3, 4.
DOH identifies these waterworks examinations as standardized WPI examinations. Its testing guide lists the numbered WTPO credentials and directs candidates to the official 2025 exam resources, which supply the corresponding WPI standardized Water Treatment Classes I–IV. Shared levels refer to full WTPO 1–4; in-training is a separate credential status, not an additional shared level.
Lists Water Treatment Plant Operator and In-Training 1, 2, 3, 4; describes 'these standardized water operator certification exams' and names Water Professionals International (WPI), directing candidates to DOH's 2025 exam resources.
Under 'Standardized Water Treatment Operator Need-to-Know,' DOH lists 'WPI Standardized Water Treatment Operator Class I,' II, III and IV; its Spanish Class 1 and 2 links are named SpanishWTPO1 and SpanishWTPO2.

Program authority: Washington State Department of Ecology
Local levels: Group I, Group II, Group III, Group IV; optional Operator in Training (OIT) Group I, Group II, Group III, Group IV.
Ecology confirms its treatment certification and local groups, but the opened official pages establish PSI delivery, WPI study resources and standardized-ABC reciprocity acceptance - not explicit adoption of standardized WPI/ABC exams for Washington candidates. Standardized versus customized or state-specific examinations, and Group-to-WPI-Class correspondence, remain unverified. Drinking-water findings are not extended to this stream.
No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.
'There are four levels of full certification' and 'four optional Operator in Training (OIT) Group Levels.' PSI administers computer-based wastewater treatment exams. The page links WPI's 2025 Need to Know Criteria; its explicit 'ABC standardized exam' statement is confined to reciprocity qualifications.
Current 2025–2027 schedule names 'Group I and Group I OIT' and 'Groups II–IV and Groups II–IV OIT'; program purpose is certification of wastewater treatment plant operators.
Shared WPI prep
Program authority: Washington State Department of Health (DOH)
Local levels: Water Distribution Specialist (WDS); Water Distribution Manager (WDM) 1, 2, 3, 4; WDM in Training 1, 2, 3, 4.
The numbered WDM credentials correspond to DOH's WPI standardized Water Distribution Classes I–IV. WDS is a separate credential associated by DOH with the WPI Very Small Water System Operator outline; do not route WDS as Class I. Shared levels refer to full WDM 1–4, not WDS.
Separately lists WDS and 'Water Distribution Manager (WDM) and WDM in Training 1, 2, 3, 4'; calls these standardized water operator certification exams and points to WPI and DOH's 2025 exam resources.
Lists WPI Standardized Water Distribution Operator Classes I–IV. Spanish Class 1 and 2 links are named SpanishWDM1 and SpanishWDM2; Very Small Water System Operator outline links are named EnglishWDS-VerySmallSystem and SpanishWDS-VerySmallSystem.
'The lower certification levels of the 2025 standardized Waterworks exams' are available in Spanish for 'WDM 1 and 2; WTPO 1 and 2; WDS, and BPAT certifications.'
Exam route under review
Program authority: Washington Wastewater Collection Personnel Association (WWCPA), Board of Directors - voluntary certifier; state designation not verified
Local levels: Voluntary: Wastewater Collection Specialist in Training (WWC-SIT); Wastewater Collection Specialist I (WWC-I), II (WWC-II), III (WWC-III), IV (WWC-IV). No separate mandatory Ecology collection credential verified.
Ecology's treatment program expressly excludes collection systems. WWCPA's own governing document establishes a distinct voluntary certification program, but state designation was not established. Its Board prepares or commissions examinations; WWC-SIT uses the Specialist I examination, and Specialist IV expressly requires an oral examination. The I–III exam provider and standardized/customized status are not identified, so do not assign shared WPI levels or label the whole program state-specific merely from silence.
No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.
Ecology's definition of a wastewater treatment plant expressly excludes 'wastewater collection systems.'
Articles dated March 5, 2026; §1.1 establishes the 'Washington Voluntary Certification Program for Wastewater Collection Personnel.' §5.10 assigns examination preparation/conduct to the Board. §§7.1–7.5 name WWC-SIT and Specialist I–IV; §7.5 requires the 'Wastewater Collection Specialist IV oral examination.'
