Wisconsin operator exam preparation

Source check: 2026-10-04. Shared WPI courses are linked only where the standardized exam and class match are confirmed. Local grades may not equal WPI class numbers. Your authority's current documents control.

Water Treatment

Dedicated prep not yet available

Program authority: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Operator Certification Program

Local levels: Municipal waterworks: Grade T (Operator-in-Training), Grade 1. Treatment/source subclasses: G - Groundwater; I - Iron removal; L - Lime softening; S - Surface water; V - VOC; Z - Zeolite softening.

Wisconsin uses process-specific subclass exams. Grade 1 adds one year of qualifying experience to the subclass-exam requirement; it is not verified as WPI Class 1. The opened Surface Water guide explicitly documents locally prepared exam questions. No standardized WPI/ABC scope or local-to-WPI class correspondence was established.

Official program information

No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.

Sources and exam scope

  • Waterworks operator certification

DNR issues certification under NR 114; lists Grade T and Grade 1 and the G/I/L/S/V/Z subclasses. Study guides provide the objectives covered on exams.

  • Surface Water Study Guide, Subclass S, revised February 2016

Preface: operators, regulators, educators and local officials jointly prepared the objectives and exam questions for this subclass. References include Wisconsin NR 809, NR 810 and NR 811.

  • Exams

2026 municipal exams are listed separately by subclass: Surface Water has 80 questions; Groundwater, Iron Removal, Lime Softening, VOC Removal and Zeolite Softening each have 40.

Wastewater Treatment

Dedicated prep not yet available

Program authority: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Operator Certification Program

Local levels: Operator-in-Training (OIT), Basic, Advanced. Subclasses: A1 - Suspended Growth Processes; A2 - Attached Growth Processes; A3 - Recirculating Media Filters; A4 - Ponds, Lagoons, and Natural Systems; A5 - Anaerobic Treatment of Liquid Waste; B - Solids Separation; C - Biological Solids/Sludge Handling, Processing, and Reuse; D - Disinfection; L - Laboratory; N - Total Nitrogen; P - Total Phosphorus; U - Unique Treatment Systems.

Normally requires Basic General Wastewater plus at least one process-subclass exam; Special U is exempt from General. Basic adds subclass experience. Advanced requires ten points, including at least four years of hands-on experience; the Advanced exam is one optional points pathway, not universally mandatory. No standardized WPI/ABC adoption or Classes 1–4 mapping was established.

Official program information

No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.

Sources and exam scope

  • Wastewater operator certification

Lists OIT, Basic and Advanced, process subclasses, General-plus-subclass requirements and the U exception. A 100-question Advanced exam earns four points toward the ten-point Advanced credential.

  • Basic General Wastewater Study Guide, revised June 2016

Preface ties certification-exam questions to the guide's key knowledges; acknowledgements identify a Wisconsin DNR, WWOA and local operator/trainer workgroup.

  • Exams

Lists separate General, process-subclass and Advanced exams. Wastewater - Unique (Subclass U) is explicitly a short-answer paper exam, unlike the multiple-choice exams.

Water Distribution

Dedicated prep not yet available

Program authority: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Operator Certification Program

Local levels: Grade T (Operator-in-Training), Grade 1; subclass D - Distribution.

Distribution is a separate Wisconsin municipal-waterworks subclass, not a verified WPI Classes 1–4 ladder. Grade 1 requires the subclass exam plus experience, rather than a separately listed higher-grade exam. Local exam-development evidence supports state-specific routing, not standardized or customized ABC attribution.

Official program information

No state-matched course is linked for this stream yet.

Sources and exam scope

  • Waterworks operator certification

D is Distribution; Grade T requires passing subclass exams, and Grade 1 requires those exams plus one year of satisfactory subclass experience.

  • Distribution Study Guide, Subclass D, revised February 2016

Preface says operators, regulators, educators and local officials jointly prepared the subclass objectives and exam questions. Outline covers principles, operation/maintenance, monitoring/troubleshooting, safety and calculations; references Wisconsin NR 809/810/811.

  • Exams

Lists Municipal Waterworks - Distribution as a 40-question exam administered in the 2026 DNR paper-exam program.

Wastewater Collection

Dedicated prep not yet available

Program authority: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Operator Certification Program

Local levels: Operator-in-Training (OIT), Basic; subclass SS - Sanitary Sewage Collection System. DNR states Basic is the only level required for collection systems; no separate Advanced collection exam is listed.

SS has its own exam and does not require Basic General Wastewater. Certification is required for at least one person where a treatment plant owns its associated collection system; satellite-system certification is voluntary. The overarching wastewater Advanced credential should not be interpreted as a distinct required collection-exam grade. No WPI Classes 1–4 correspondence was verified.

Dedicated course research

Dedicated prep is not available or being sold yet.

  • Wisconsin municipal treatment preparation organized by G/I/L/S/V/Z subclass and Grade T/Grade 1 requirements, rather than WPI Classes 1–4. Use each DNR subclass outline; the opened S guide specifically references Wisconsin NR 809/810/811.
  • Separate Wisconsin Distribution D preparation using its DNR outline, including local monitoring, sampling, cross-connection, operating and safety requirements and the referenced NR 809/810/811 rules.
  • Wisconsin wastewater Basic General plus selected process-subclass preparation; distinguish OIT/Basic experience progression from the optional Advanced-exam points pathway. Provide a distinct U outline and short-answer-format route rather than requiring General for U.
  • Dedicated Wisconsin SS collection preparation using the August 2018 guide and its NR 210.23 CMOM, NR 110, SPS 382 and confined-space references; explain mandatory versus voluntary applicability and the General-exam exemption.

What still needs confirmation

  • Assessment target: October 3, 2026. Official sources were retrieved October 4, 2026; no archived cutoff-date snapshots were acquired. Eight source URLs were opened, meeting the exploration cap.
  • State-specific classifications rest on DNR's local exam-development/guide evidence, not exam delivery, reciprocity, membership or contact listings. Individual development documentation was opened for water S and D, wastewater General and SS, not every other subclass or the Advanced exam. No explicit standardized WPI/ABC scope and local-class mapping was found; all verifiedSharedLevels therefore remain empty.
  • The wastewater page retains obsolete wording that collection exams would be developed in 2018. Its published August 2018 SS guide and current 2026 exam list establish that the exam is offered; the obsolete future-tense statement was not treated as current status.
  • Drinking-water grade findings concern municipal waterworks. DNR also lists a separate Small Water System (OTM/NN) program and Water System General Operation exam; its grades and exam-development scope were not independently verified within the source cap. Guide rule references were verified, but current regulation texts were not separately opened.
